Speaking notes for Hon. Perrin Beatty, President and CEO, The Canadian Chamber of Commerce
It’s a pleasure for me to be here in Edmonton, and particularly to be able to speak to a group that has such a key role to play in an issue of great importance to all of us.
My role at the Canadian Chamber takes me across Canada to visit various communities, meet business leaders and exchange ideas on issues of importance to us all and to the wellbeing of our country. I am struck both by how diverse our land is but also by how common our concerns and aspirations are. And nowhere should that be more the case than when we are discussing our energy security and our common environment.
Because the Canadian Chamber of Commerce is the only national organization connecting businesses of all types, from every province and territory, to advocate public policies that will foster a strong, competitive economic environment - ones that benefit businesses, communities, and families across Canada, we have a special responsibility.
The energy sector is a cornerstone of our prosperity. It plays a critical role for Canada in serving the energy needs of all Canadians and in generating major income from foreign sales. There is virtually no other country in the world that does not look at our energy inheritance with envy.
