Every other week, we release 5 Minutes for Business, a publication written by Hendrik Brakel, our Senior Director of Economic, Financial and Tax Policy. In these publications, Hendrik briefly describes current issues that affect the Canadian economy and provides insight on what it will mean for Canadians today and the future. In this week’s edition, he looks at the recent federal budget and the measures it contains (or that were left out) that will affect business.

Last week, we published our analysis of the 2016 federal budget, a report card based on business priorities and we awarded it a B-. Since then, we’ve heard from a number of chambers across the country that perhaps we’ve been too generous with our grading. A Bloomberg reporter told us that the importance of business has plummeted, pointing out that the word “business” appeared 622 times in last year’s Conservative budget. This year, just 87 times.

So has business become an afterthought? Does the budget contain concrete measures to help Canada become more competitive?

Read 5 Minutes for Business to find out.
