The Haliburton Highlands Chamber of Commerce (HHCC) has leveraged its community partnerships to successfully launch a local-first initiative called #BuyCloseBy.
The idea of a “local-first” initiative came up in 2017, when one of their members was actively developing the hashtag #BuyCloseBy. After consultation, it was decided that the HHCC would adopt and expand the moniker county-wide. The HHCC then worked with partners to successfully gain funding to kick-start the initiative from the Haliburton County Development Corporation, the Algonquin Gateway Business Association, Haliburton BIA, Haliburton Highlands Home Builders Association and the County of Haliburton Tourism Department.
#BuyCloseBy aims to increase awareness of what is available locally, while educating on how local spending benefits the community.
“As a community we need to share our successes and to support our community to maintain its viability,” said Richard Wannan, President, HHCC.
#BuyCloseBy was launched on June 28, the project has been positively taken up by the community and will include “ambassador” training seminars, a community-wide contest, as well as media promotion to maintain the momentum through the winter months.
