This week is Global Entrepreneurship Week, which commemorates the power entrepreneurs have to transform economies worldwide. To help us celebrate, our Board member, Nicole Verkindt, CEO of OMX and an entrepreneur, has shared with us her perspective on Canadian entrepreneurship.
"Being an entrepreneur in Canada has changed enormously since I started out a decade ago. There is now a much larger community and ecosystem around entrepreneurs, especially women entrepreneurs. There is a lot more support for both entrepreneurship and the merits of embracing innovation. I believe this is the critical first step towards fostering an economy of growth, and it is incredible how far we have come in that short time. However, there is still a gap between the people and organizations that say they support entrepreneurs and their actions. We need much better resources in Canada for entrepreneurs to access capital and we need avenues for entrepreneurs to be able to sell to Canadian organizations. We have some very large organizations in this country, our governments included, and it is still very difficult for individuals within an organization who support entrepreneurs to then actually test solutions and ultimately buy them. The gap between support and executing that support must be bridged. I love being a Canadian entrepreneur, but now we need to put the desires of our business community into action!"
