The Canadian Chamber of Commerce is pleased that the federal government and representatives of Canada’s Indigenous peoples have agreed on a path forward on reconciliation as outlined in the Prime Minister’s statement today. Our members believe Canada’s businesses have a role to play in reconciliation and have been asking for clarity from the federal government on its expectations of them.

In September, delegates from local chambers of commerce and boards of trade throughout Canada endorsed a policy resolution calling upon the federal government to establish the framework and timelines for a process for reconciliation with Indigenous peoples that includes examining international best practices as well as seeking the perspectives of a broad range of stakeholders including the business community. We hope that the path forward announced today will provide more clarity on the roles and responsibilities of the Crown, Indigenous peoples and businesses in reconciliation and believe we can make a constructive contribution to it.
